Filthy to Fabulous: The Boston Harbor Story

Join the Friends of Winter Pond and Bruce Berman on Oct 25, 2011 at 7pm at the Winchester Public Library.  For 25 years, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay has been the driving force behind transforming Boston Harbor from one of the dirtiest urban harbors in America to one of the cleanest in the world. Our mission is to restore, protect and share Boston Harbor, Massachusetts Bay, our region’s beaches and the Boston Harbor Islands for everyone to enjoy. Working with a broad base of civic, corporate, government, scientific, philanthropic and community partners, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay continues to strengthen the connection between communities, the harbor, and promote the increasingly important impact Boston Harbor has on the region’s economy.

Since 1996, Save the Harbor has:

  • Successfully advocated for billions of dollars in environmental cleanup of the harbor
  • Led the efforts to create the Boston Harbor Islands National Park
  • Connected more than 50,000 city youth with educational programs to the harbor
  • Ongoing monitoring of the Harbor’s clean-up and its impact on water quality
  • Organizes and funds other Harbor and beach related community groups

One of the original founders, Bruce Berman serves as Director of Strategy, Communications and Programs for Save the Harbor / Save the Bay. He is also CEO of Catalyst New Media Group, a Boston based communications consulting firm and a part time faculty member in public policy, marine science and management at Boston University. Bruce will share the story of the remarkable transformation of Boston Harbor and how its continuing work impacts the region’s economy, communities and ecosystem.

New Storm Drain to Winter Pond

Installed at Woodside Road Landing

The Winchester Department of Public Works, DPW, started digging to prepare for installing a new storm drain at Woodside Road on December 2.  On October 27, 2009, the Friends of Winter Pond donated $11,600 to the Town of Winchester for the purchase and installation of the new storm drain. Bob Conway, Town Engineer, presented a drawing with details about the drain at the John Clarke Memorial Lecture on October 14 at the Winchester Public Library. The drain will help filter contaminants running into the pond from the entire watershed area that flows into the drain, then into both Little and Big Winter Ponds. This new drain will replace the old drain that is no longer functioning efficiently and is expected to help preserve Winter Pond for future generations.
